Dear Friends
Today, the President of Sri Lanka His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa in his address to the nation declared that the 26 year old civil war is now over. He called on all Sri Lankans from all ethnic backgrounds to unite and work towards rebuilding the country.
The Sri Lankan government is totally committed to ensuring unity and peace amongst its people. This involves rehabilitating and reintegrating the people, who for various reasons, supported or were a part of the LTTE.
As an example, Sri Lanka demonstrated its ability to achieve this in the Eastern province, which I personally witnessed when I was in Sri Lanka recently.
It is important that all of us who live outside Sri Lanka, continue to demonstrate our ability to achieve these goals through our own behaviour and conduct.
We will then convince the world that we are a nation of people for whom forgiveness, is a valued tradition of our culture.
At this point of time, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those of you who proudly supported the government and played a part in defending the integrity and promoting the sovereignty of Sri Lanka.
My focus now is to support the Sri Lankan government in its efforts to rebuild the country.
I am please to announce that today, I have been able to obtain a significant amount of hospital and medical equipment for shipment to Sri Lanka.
I am aware that some of you have already sent medical supplies that are urgently required in Sri Lanka.
I once again thank you for your belief and commitment to your motherland.
Please feel free to contact me if you need any assistance.
