LONDON: More than 20,000 Tamil civilians were killed in the final days of Sri Lanka's military operation to defeat Tamil Tigers rebels, the Times newspaper reported yesterday.
Sri Lanka's authorities say their forces stopped using heavy weapons on April 27 in a no-fire zone where there were about 100,000 Tamil civilians.
Citing confidential UN documents it acquired, the Times said the civilian death toll in the no-fire zone soared from late April, with around 1000 civilians killed daily until May 19.

The UNHRC yesterday dropped resolution

The UNHRC yesterday dropped the Swiss-EU draft resolution calling for an investigation into possible war crimes in Sri Lanka's recently concluded war on terrorism and adopted Sri Lanka's counter resolution with some of the proposals in the Swiss-EU document incorporated into it.
Of the 49-member Council, 29 voted for Sri Lanka's resolution, 12 against and 6 abstained.
A last minute move by Germany to introduce nine proposals to Sri Lanka's resolution on behalf of the EU was scuttled by Cuba. Those proposals were considered detrimental to Sri Lanka’s interests.
LTTE backers vehemently condemned the resolution while some rights groups faulted the UNHRC for budging.
Geneva based sources said some compromises had been made by both sides to promote consensus among the Council members.
The UNHRC had a Special Session at the behest of the US, the UK and EU. Denmark and Britain were leading a vocal and sustained drive to pin down Sri Lanka and this resulted in most Council members pledging solidarity with Sri Lanka. Indian and Pakistan sank differences to throw their weight behind Sri Lanka.
Countries with Sri Lanka:
India, Pakistan, Russia, China, Malaysia, Angola, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bolivia, Brazil, Bukinafaso, Cameron, Cuba, Djibouti, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia,

Jordan, Madagascar, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Uruguay, Zambia, Qatar, South Africa, , Senegal, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria
Against Sri Lanka
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Canada, Chile, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, UK and Zambia
Abstained
Argentina, Gabon, Japan, Mauritius, Republic of Korea and Ukraine.
Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe last night told The Island that Mauritius and Korea had been among the 17 countries which originally moved against Sri Lanka.

Hands off Sri Lanka -Ban Ki-Moon urges Sri Lanka

Colombo (AsiaNews) – The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon is due to arrive this evening in Sri Lanka. He is expected to tour refugee camps around Vavuniya holding an estimated 250,000 civilians displaced by the country’s civil war. On Saturday he will meet with President Mahinda Rajapakse and Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama.
The United Nations wants the Sri Lankan government to give international organisations access to internally displaced people (IDP) camps.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has complained in fact that “For nine consecutive days” they have been trying without success to “reach the area of north-eastern Sri Lanka hard hit by fighting in recent weeks.”

The Sri Lankan military has denied them access and direct contact with IDPs.........

Why this all shit baskets so worried about sri lanka.
These junks wanted a ceasefire when the war against terror goes well. Now they want resetteled the IDPs within overnight. These NGO s must be thinking Sri lanka is govern by world ,Not the democratically elected government ,which the election was moniterd by international watch dogs and approved by them .As sri lankans we appriciate countries like Japan and china who already helping us by millions of dollers to rehabilitate the war torn areas.
But not this NGOs who earn there living by selling poverty of developning countries like Sri Lanka, and help terroeists to grow by false media.

Prabhakaran`s final hours

Only 3 LTTE leaders, other than Prabhakaran and his wife, knew of his whereabouts. Other than his son Charles Anthony, the only other LTTE leaders who knew where he was was Poddu Ammaan, the Intelligence Chief and the head of the LTTE`s Medical Unit, Reagan. The latter was taken in and detained for days until Military Intelligence got hold of him. Until then Regan had pretended he did not know Prabhakaran`s whereabouts. Thanks to Reagan`s information, MI officers had clearly identified Prabhakaran`s lair by 16th evening/17th dawn. They uncovered an elaborate plan by Prabhakaran and gang to breach the 53 FDL. The plan was to cross the lagoon to Mullaitivu-Weli Oya Jungles, from there to reach the Eastern Province (Batticaloa/Ampara) via Trincomalee, where `Colonel` Ram`s team was waiting...............

Massage from Hon Consul for Sri Lanka

Dear Friends
Today, the President of Sri Lanka His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa in his address to the nation declared that the 26 year old civil war is now over. He called on all Sri Lankans from all ethnic backgrounds to unite and work towards rebuilding the country.
The Sri Lankan government is totally committed to ensuring unity and peace amongst its people. This involves rehabilitating and reintegrating the people, who for various reasons, supported or were a part of the LTTE.
As an example, Sri Lanka demonstrated its ability to achieve this in the Eastern province, which I personally witnessed when I was in Sri Lanka recently.
It is important that all of us who live outside Sri Lanka, continue to demonstrate our ability to achieve these goals through our own behaviour and conduct.
We will then convince the world that we are a nation of people for whom forgiveness, is a valued tradition of our culture.
At this point of time, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those of you who proudly supported the government and played a part in defending the integrity and promoting the sovereignty of Sri Lanka.
My focus now is to support the Sri Lankan government in its efforts to rebuild the country.
I am please to announce that today, I have been able to obtain a significant amount of hospital and medical equipment for shipment to Sri Lanka.
I am aware that some of you have already sent medical supplies that are urgently required in Sri Lanka.
I once again thank you for your belief and commitment to your motherland.
Please feel free to contact me if you need any assistance.

Russia backs Sri lanka

Russia backs Lanka

Russia has said that while being concerned with the humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka, there was no doubt the country was fighting a tough and difficult enemy – the LTTE, which was banned by many countries as a terrorist organization.
Russian Ambassador at the United Nations Vitaly Churkin who is also the incoming Security Council President told journalists on Monday that it was no secret the LTTE was conducting itself
inhumanely by using civilians as human shields. “We hope the international community will be able to help the Sri Lankan government ............
