'Sri Lanka a peaceful nation'- USAID Asia Pacific Director

"Sri Lanka's war has ended and the country is peaceful. The government's forward march is successful and needs the support of the international community to rebuild", Aje Chhibber, USAID Asia pacific Director has stated.

Mr. Chhibber has made these comments to press and media following his tour to Sri Lanka. The USAID director was provided opportunity to visit the civilian welfare villages in North. "The Sri Lankan government has assured the United Nations that resettlement will be completed by January. As scheduled, resettlements of rescued civilians are being made in their places of origin".

Complementing the government's resettlement effort, Mr. Chhibber also made satisfactory remarks on the health facilities extended for the rescued civilians. Also refuting accusations made by some extremist factions about the situation in the welfare villages, he said the Government has given priority to de-mining activities in the liberated areas.
The agricultural projects launched in the civilian welfare villages are a good idea, he said. "There will be a new Sri Lanka within several years if these projects are continued as scheduled", he further stated.
