Resounding victory for SL ruling Party

Colombo, 09 August, (Asiantribune.com): Sri Lanka’s ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance scored handsome victories in the two local-body elections in the Northern Province and in the Uva Provincial Council election.
In the elections held just after defeating the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, UPFA acquired a convincing majority in the Jaffna Municipal Council election bagging 13 out of the total of 23 seats.
Jaffna Municipal Council
The United People’s Freedom Alliance scored a resounding victory in the Jaffna Municipal Council, securing 10,602 votes (50.67%) and 13 of the 23 seats. The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi polled 8,008 votes (38.28%), winning 8 seats, while Independent Group 1 polled 1175 Votes (5.62% ) and the Tamil United Liberation Front polled 1007 votes (4.81%) and got one seat each.
The Main opposition United National Party only received 83 votes.
Out of a total of 100,417 registered voters, the total votes polled was only 22,280 , according to the detailed results released by the Election Commissioner.

Vavuniya Urban Council
In Vavuniya Urban Council election, Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi has received 4,279 votes (34.81%), while the Democratic Peoples Liberation Front gaining 4,136 votes (33.65%). UPFA has obtained 3.045 votes (24.77%) and one seat goes to Sri Lanka Muslim Congress polled 587 votes (4.78%). The United National Party received a total of 228 votes.
Total registered 24,626 and the total polled was 12,850 votes
Uva Provincial Council
The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) secured a convincing victory at the Uva provincial Council elections gaining a total number of 418,906 votes (72.39%). 25 UPFA members were elected.
The United National Party (UNP) polled 129,144 votes (22.32%). Only 7 UNP members were elected. The People’s Liberation Front (JVP) obtained 14,639 votes (2.53%), while the Up-Country People’s Front obtained 9,227 votes (1.59%). 1 member each from both parties were elected.
Total registered votes 875,452 and total polled was 613,133 votes.
