Lanka second in Test rankings
| |
It is the first time Sri Lanka achieved such a high ranking |
It is the first time Sri Lanka achieved such a high rank in international Test rankings, Daily Mirror sports editor Channaka de Silva said.
“This is a unique moment in Sri Lanka’s short history of Test cricket,” president of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), DS de Silva told BBC Sandeshaya.
He expressed hope that, if the current form continues, Sri Lankan team will soon achieve the top post in the most prestigious form of cricket.
For being defeated by fifth-placed England in the series, Australia loses eight ratings points and is knocked off top spot for the first time since the current method of ranking was introduced in May 2003.
While South Africa have reached the top spot, India are currently ranked third in the Test cricket world ahead of Australia and England.Murali goes beyond the 15-degree, says Richardson

Mark Richardson, the former New Zealand Test opener, has reopened the question over Muttiah Muralitharan's bowling action by saying that he was convinced many of his deliveries were well beyond the 15-degree allowance approved by lawmakers.
Richardson said he did not blame Murali for the situation but felt the ICC was not doing enough to police throwing in cricket. New Zealand are touring Sri Lanka for two Tests, two Twenty20s and an ODI tri-series. They lost the first Test by 202 runs, with Murali taking 7 for 161.
"Many of his deliveries may fall around the 15 degrees but, in my opinion, too many," Richardson, now a television commentator, wrote in his column in the Herald on Sunday. "In particular his faster deliveries appear well beyond it and since the introduction of the 15 degree allowance his action appears to have deteriorated.

U.S. youths launch campaign against Microsoft Investment in Sri Lanka
Noting MSNBC's coverage of the conditions within the military supervised internment camps in Vavuniyaa, which said that "no one is allowed to leave the camps and few are permitted entrance," and that the camps are "at best...at the edge of all kinds of internal principles...but more likely...illegal," the U.S. based activist youth group, PEARL, urged Microsoft to reconsider investments in Sri Lanka, saying, "[t]he human rights community and Tamils all over the world are deeply concerned about the ultimate use of funds given to government of Sri Lanka. While technology transfer is important, blanket support should not be given to governments who do not respect the rule of law and basic human rights. We urge you to hear the cries of voiceless Tamils, and avoid doing business with regimes as egregious as Sri Lanka's."
While praising the charitable activities of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in the areas of global health, the youth campaign referred to the Gates Foundation goal of increasing "access to information technology in impoverished countries," and said, "[a]lthough this is yet another admirable pursuit, the business you have decided to carry out in Sri Lanka is deeply concerning to human rights activists." .

Tug-of-war for LTTE drug cartel
Following the LTTE Leader Prabhakaran's death, a massive tug-of-war is on in the drug world to grab his multi-million dollar drug cartel. Several other gangs are looking to take over the syndicate, which has corporate-like operations, an Indian official said.
Narcotics experts believe the LTTE arranged funds for its terror activities by smuggling drugs from Sri Lanka to European and American countries. According to experts, the LTTE also supplied drugs to Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. The LTTE's drug smuggling business was worth about $200-300 million. The outfit procured most of its consignments, largely heroin, from the Golden Crescent -spread over Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan, via Indian routes.
"The LTTE had joined hands with other terrorist outfits involved in drug smuggling in neighboring countries. The Tigers got their supply from outfits that operate from PoK. So the outfits that earlier supplied drugs to the LTTE will try to spread tentacles in the market that earlier belonged to LTTE," a senior Narcotics Control Bureau official said
